Tetris Wouldn't Triumph at This Gaming Ceremony — A New Category May Address This Issue

Each time a significant honors show approaches, one notices a demand for the addition additional classifications to recognize unsung work and fill the passions of enthusiasts who have specialized interests.

My colleague has already made advocating for terror-themed awards. It would be amazing. So would tabletop games, this being someone's personal cause. Yet I need to apologize in advance if I try to elbow in front because like all dedicated enthusiasts, there's a strong justification for why my demand remains most pressing and significant. Here's the proposal: It's essential to create a classification for brain-teasing titles.

The Genre Classification Challenge

Classifying creative works is not a science; it’s very subjective, and typically start arguments concluding with vague boundaries. This explains why movie academies avoid this approach. However, it represents a necessary evil within the realm of gaming, which are so diverse they hardly constitute as a single art form.

For the full spectrum of interactive entertainment excellence to gain proper attention, while allowing diverse titles to receive proper recognition, genre categories are essential.

Current Gaming Award Categories

Leading game ceremonies offer these classifications covering Action, Action/Adventure, RPG experiences, Combat games, Sim/Strategy, and Sports/Racing games. Together, these award types successfully include many game types, making space possible for numerous titles.

Different situation exists for puzzle games. No suitable classification appears for their placement. Consider three of outstanding current releases, each quite distinct: the architectural riddles from a specific release, intense tile-matching in a different title, and the sweetly sociological logic puzzles from additional release. What category would fit them within current classifications? Unfortunately, nowhere.

Acknowledgment Issues

Numerous examples exist of brilliant puzzle games released every year without proper recognition during gaming ceremonies, except when they manage to fit classification types such as Mobile Game, VR/AR Game, or the intensely contested small studio competitions.

  • A renowned logic title wasn’t nominated for anything in 2014
  • Another imaginative release received no nominations in 2019
  • Well-received sorting experience was overlooked recently
  • Limited numbers of logic titles barely qualified for niche award types

Importance of Logic Titles

Frequently they represent modest productions, but the art behind logic titles holds tremendous importance. Well-known matching games stand as the most-played games in the world and have been for many years.

The iconic tile-matching title rivals popular creative games for the title of highest-selling title ever; it additionally competes for top gaming experience. Brain-teasers form essential building blocks for gaming as medium, while interacting across multiple categories.

Recommendation and Reasoning

Brain-teasers wouldn't encounter such difficulty. It would be easy to populate multiple candidates interesting, varied, worthy titles every year with ease — perhaps, with difficulty, since numerous excellent so many good games out.

And to reiterate, these include experiences lacking appropriate categories at major gaming awards. Brain-teaser creators are working at the hard edge of video game design, producing among essential manifestations of gaming itself. Just like movie stunt professionals, they deserve recognition. Don't make them wait 35 years.
